Perfection isn't by chance, It's Made!

                                                                               American Bully Health

Our dogs are more then just pets to us, they are a part of our family and as so we do tons of research to make sure that our dogs are as healthy as possible. Here are a few health topics that we would like to share with you. Every breed differs from the others and just like other breeds the American Bully has its own needs and its own remedies that work well for this breed.

                                                                        Spaying and Neutering

Like anything else, there are both pros and cons when it comes to neutering your dog.
 The pros of neutering are:
  •  Dog Neutering Prevents Animal Overpopulation If there is no "birth control" among dogs and other domesticated pets, there will be too many unwanted, homeless dogs and other pets, putting a lot of burden on animal shelters and resulting in the euthanasia of unwanted pets. It is estimated that in the USA alone, 5 to 12 million unwanted animals are euthanize every year in animal shelters.
  •  Dog Castration Eliminates Unwanted Behaviors in Male Dogs Perhaps one big pro for neutering a male dog is it prevents him from roaming the streets to get to a female dog in heat. Roaming can very often result in accidents, e.g. being hit by a car, getting in fights with other male dogs, etc. As well, a neutered dog is less likely to mark territory, mount or hump other dogs (or the fire hydrant :).
  • Neutering Reduces Some Health Problems Some health problems are often seen in the reproductive systems of intact, nonbreeding dogs. Dog neutering, therefore, can prevent some such health problems in our dogs. For example, dog castration can prevent certain prostate problems from arising when the dog gets older, such as prostate enlargement. Certain types of hernias, testicle and anus tumors can also be prevented by neutering. For female dogs, spaying can reduce the incidence of reproductive system cancers (e.g. breast cancer) and uterine infections. As well, in intact dogs, when the hormonal drives cannot be satisfied, they may become aggressive, or may experience mental stress, which in turn can cause health problems in the long run.
The cons of dog neutering are:
  •  Surgical Complications Although very rare, there is a possibility that a dog may react badly to anesthesia. The dog may also experience complications during surgery or recovery. For example, some dogs may react negatively to the suture material used, and incisions do not heal properly leading to infections.
  • Neutering Increases Risks of Certain Types of Cancer While neutering can prevent certain types of cancer, dogs who are spayed/neutered before one year of age have a higher chance of developing osteosarcoma compared to intact dogs. In addition, early spaying increases the risk of developing hemangiosarcomas compared to intact female dogs. Try to find out if your dog's breed has inherited cancer risks and, if so, for which type of cancer. This can help you make more informed decisions as to whether you should sterilize your dog.
  •  Costs Some dog parents are also concerned about the costs involved. However, if that is your concern, try contacting your local humane society. They may be able to recommend some city-run low-cost clinics that routinely perform dog neuter operations.

When to Spay/Neuter your dog

Spaying and neutering of a American Bully should not be done before 24 months of age, I say this due to health risk that can come from robbing your dog of sex hormones that control the growth of the body and how it fills out and matures along with bone density. Dogs that are spayed/neutered before this age grow taller, leaner and have weaker bones then those who are spayed/neutered before their bodies are fully matured. Your dog will not be as thick boned or get the signature head piece that the American Bully is known for.  Dogs who are spayed/neutered early continue to have growth of the tibia, which normally stops growing at 12 to 14 months of age this causes abnormal angle of the stifle. Hip and elbow dysplasia are common in dogs that are spayed/neutered before 5 1/2 months of age. Studies have been made on the impact of early spaying/neutering on a dogs behavior, once thought that it helped with mounting (humping) has been proven wrong. Early spay/neuter actually increases the likely hood that a dog will continue to mount and without training which will control mounting that a dog will continue to preform mounting to the point were there is no other option but training to disrupt this behavior.  The most commonly observed behavioral problem in spayed females was fearful behavior and the most common problem in males was aggression. Fear of loud noises has also been associated in studies done on early spayed/neutered dogs. Adverse reactions to vaccines has also been added in studies done.

My conclusion, do not spay/neuter before 24 months of age. We will be adding this to our contract for the health of your puppy. If you are a responsible dog owner, keeping your intact animal away from any chance of an accidental breeding is 100% effective if avoiding a accidental litter!

                                                                         Intro to Raw food

There are different kinds of raw food diets and its important that you have someone knowledgeable help you along your journey. A raw feeding group is recommended, along with a raw savvy Veterinarian. We prefer a Prey Model Diet, while some people will choose to feed their dogs a diet that consist of fruits and vegetables this is sometimes not recommended by experienced Raw feeders as their is a large debate that dogs are not omnivores but are strictly carnivorous. We feed our dogs a combination of both, while they get mostly animal material we still give them veggies as treats, we do not feed fruits as most are too strong for a dogs digestive system with the acid qualities that are found in some fruits.

This website I have found is one of the best for those interested in raw.

Raw Learning

There are risk when feeding a raw diet but the benefits far outweigh the risk, but there are risk we take when feeding our pets any kind of diet. These risk are often because of people who feed raw and don't follow the clean guidelines when handling fresh meat. With kibble you take the risk of seriously dehydrating them and unknowingly cause them to be come malnourished, with moist food you have teeth degeneration and gum disease. It's your job to provide the best quality food as possible for your dog, but it's your dog and your choice as what you decided to feed him/her.

I like the prey model diet and lean more towards following their guide lines. More information can be read below.

Prey Model Diet (What we feed)

5-10% organs with around half being liver
10-15% bones
80-85% muscle and other parts

60-80% raw meaty bones, bones must have at least 50% meat

20-40% of fruits and vegetables

Which ever choice you choose, make sure you are in contact with a Raw diet feeder, get the facts before you start your dog!

We also feed our dogs Diatomaceous Earth (food grade), commonly called "DE" Diatomaceous Earth is a non-toxic, safe substances made up from crushed fossils of freshwater organisms and marine life. Crushed to a fine powder and observed through a microscope, the particles resemble bits of broken glass. DE is deadly to any insect yet completely harmless to humans and animals. DE will destroy roundworms, pinworms, whipworms, and hookworms within 7 days of being fed daily (mixed into meals, or given in treats) but to be completely effective DE should be fed for 30 days to destroy the complete life cycle of internal parasites. DE will kill worms or immature worms even if they are in the lungs.

Dosage: 1 Tablespoon a day of DE for dogs 55lbs and over (you can not over dose a dog on DE!), for puppies or small dogs 1 teaspoon a day.  Use daily or as needed up to 30 days to provide full internal parasite removal.

                                                                       NuVet Plus and NuJoint Plus

While our Bullies are healthy, active and happy we do feed a supplement for added benefits to keep our Bullies in tip top health and shape. With added health benefits, protection from free radicals and overall great health we must give credit to the people at the NuVet Laboratories for their fine products. Since moving from Montana to Florida we have to give thanks to NuVet for the added help with curing our dogs itchy skin from the Florida environment and grass. I have talked with other breeders and vets and this is a common problem that happens when dogs from the northern states like Montana move out to the Florida. The change in environment can sometimes cause skin allergies, while Kratos was born and raised in California he didn't have a problem adjusting to the coast line of Florida but Jericho who was born and raised in Montana didn't fair as well, his skin became red and he developed a allergy to the Florida grass. While we have used NuVet products on and off since 2001 for the added vitamins, nutrients and Immune System support that it offers we have decided to give NuVet Plus on a daily basis to help combat the change in environment and to make sure our Bullies are getting everything they need from their diet. Whether it be a commercial dog food diet or a raw Prey Model diet, our dogs need to get everything they can to keep them as healthy as possible. No dog food is giving your dog 100% of what it needs, even those that meet the AAFCO requirements don't have the all the ingredients that are found in the NuVet Plus and NuJoint Plus supplements. With these added benefits that are found in the NuVet Lab quality products we can guarantee that are dogs are covered completely when fed along with their normal diets. This is why we recommend and are a proud NuVet distributor.

                                                                                 High Quality Diet

This is the most important thing you can do for the health of your Bully, a high quality diet. American Bullies are known to have common food allergies that can cause havoc on a dogs body. We prefer to feed our dogs a raw diet because of the advantages of it but we do understand that a lot of people are still kibble feeders. The site below has all the dog foods in the country with the brands rating and information.

 Dog Food Reviews & Ratings

Garlic has been used for thousands of years in Chinese and Ayurvedic medicine. It contains at least 30 compounds that have been found to be useful for a variety of conditions from skin disorders to cancer. In fact, holistic veterinarians have been recommending garlic for many years for its multiple health benefits. Below are the main health benefits of garlic for dogs:

  • Boosting the Immune System Garlic stimulates immune functions in the bloodstream by increasing the activities of killer cells (cells that seek out and destroy invading microbes and cancer cells). It is therefore beneficial for dogs with suppressed immune systems and dogs fighting cancer. Moderate garlic supplementation in the diets of even healthy dogs can boost their immunity and prevent cancer.
  • Fighting Bacterial/Viral/Fungal Infections Garlic is a powerful antimicrobial and antibiotic and is effective in fighting various forms of internal or external bacterial, viral, or fungal infection, including parasites (e.g. tapeworms) and protozoan organisms (e.g. giardia). Fresh garlic fed as part of a dog's diet can fight infections of the mouth, throat, respiratory tract, stomach, or intestines. Crushed garlic diluted in olive oil can be used as a topical antiseptic for minor injuries, ear infections, or ear mites.
  • Enhancing Liver Function Garlic has detoxifying effects. At least six compounds contained in garlic can enhance liver function by helping the liver to eliminate toxins from the body, thereby preventing toxic accumulation that may lead to cancerous growths.
  • Lowering Blood Cholesterol and Triglyceride Levels Uncooked garlic mixed in with food helps to lower blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels in dogs, making it useful for certain breeds (e.g. miniature schnauzers, beagles) that are predisposed to hyperlipidemia, a condition in which the amount of fats (lipids) in the blood are elevated.
  • Cardiovascular Tonic A compound in garlic is effective at preventing blood clot formation in the vascular system. It can also reduce cholesterol levels and fat buildup in the arteries (atheorsclerosis). Therefore, it is an excellent cardiovascular tonic for older dogs.
  • Tick/Flea Repellent The exact reason and extent of garlic's effect on tick and flea prevention is not clear. It may be due to the odor released through the dog's skin as the compounds in garlic are metabolized. Whatever the reason, there are a lot of anecdotal reports on the effectiveness of garlic (especially in combination with brewer's yeast) as a tick/flea repellent.

 Amount of Garlic to give

Dr. Pitcairn (author of The Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats) recommends the following amount of fresh garlic for dogs, according to their size:
  • 10 to 15 pounds - half a clove
  • 20 to 40 pounds - 1 clove
  • 45 to 70 pounds - 2 cloves
  • 75 to 90 pounds - 2 and a half cloves
  • 100 pounds and over - 3 cloves

Feeding every other day and giving the dog a one week break every 5 weeks.

                                                                                        Flaxseed Oil

It is well known that omega-3 fatty acids are beneficial for humans, but they're good for dogs, too. In fact, this substance, found in several foods including soybeans, salmon and sardines can boost your dog's health, aid in the treatment of cancer and play a major role in maintaining the immune system. Flaxseed oil is especially rich in omega-3 fatty acids. There are several conditions that can be helped or controlled by the adding flaxseed oil to your dog's diet.

Inflammatory Disease

Inflammatory disease like inflammatory bowel disease or arthritis can be maintained and even treated by feeding your dog flaxseed oil on a regular basis. This can ease symptoms, and prevent flares of symptoms if taken on a predictable schedule.

Heart Disease

Flaxseed oil can also help heart disease in dog. This is especially beneficial as a preventative measure. Implementing fatty acids as a regular part of a dog's diet can help prevent high cholesterol, blood pressure and heart rhythm problems. If your dog has already been diagnosed with heart disease, using flaxseed oil should still be a priority alongside his prescribed medications.

Flaxseed oil is also helpful in the treatment and prevention of cancer in dogs. omega-3 fatty acids work to slow down cancer growth or prevent it in the first place. Better yet, regular intake of this substance can boost the immune system over time, helping your dog's body fight against the cancer on its own or prevent free radicals from converting more cells into cancer.

Making flaxseed oil a regular part of your diet can also prevent or control allergies. Dogs that suffer from allergies often have poor immune systems to begin with. The introduction of omega-3 fatty acids can improve their immune system and make allergies less of a problem.

Coat Maintenance

Another benefit of flaxseed oil for your dog is its affect on his coat. If your dog suffers from a dry or very dull coat, fatty acids help to improve the texture of his coat, making for fuller, shinier hair. While superficial, a dull coat is often a sign of other health problems like a weakened immune system. Since flaxseed oil makes the coat shiny, it is apparent that this also helps the health of your pet.

Light skinned dogs and dogs with large amounts of white can get sunburned very easily. Sunburned skin has a high chance of developing cancer, so we try to avoid our dogs from getting sunburned.

Avalon Organics Baby Natural Mineral Sunscreen, SPF 18. I can recommend it for the following reasons:

  • It has an SPF (sun protection factor) of 18 (you should look for sunscreens with an SPF of 15 or higher for your dog)
  • It is a lotion, not a spray
  • The main ingredient is Titanium dioxide
  • It is Paraben free
  • It is fragrance free
  • It contains a lot of natural ingredients good for the skin, such as sunflower and jojoba seed oils, organic green tea leaf, chamomile flower, calendula flower and ginkgo leaf extracts, aloe juice, vitamin E, and so on.

                                                                                       Lawn Care

Dawn Dish Soap (Yes again....)

Dawn dish soap can be used to clean grass and to make it healthier. The best way to prevent bald or yellow spots in your grass is to hose the grass for a few minutes were your dog just went to the bath room. Dawn can be used to not only clean your grass on the occasions when something has upsetting your dogs stomach and caused it to have diarrhea but it also helps the grass as well. Make sure you use a small amount and hose the extra off. A small amount will go a long way. Dawn also repels fleas and other bothersome bugs.

                                                                                       Flea and Tick

Tobacco Dust:

Tobacco dust repels fleas. Buy a big bag every year and spread it on your yard with a broadcast spreader or however you decided to spread it. It will keep the fleas off your property and off your dog! However it should only be used on your lawn. Sprinkle it sparsely around the yard, do not use too much. However, don't use it in your house, as it is harmful to kids, and very harmful to cats.

Dawn Dish Soap:

If you dog has fleas on it give it a bath with Dawn dish soap, not only will your dog be clean but the Dawn drowns the fleas, if removing fleas is why your bathing your dog you will want to bathe it two weeks apart for one month. This will kill the adult fleas and will kill the fleas that hatch out of flea eggs that Dawn has no effect on. This is a safe alternative to "Pet Safe" pet shampoos.  Most if not nearly all pet shampoos have a mild dose of pesticide in it that can be harmful even in a small dose. Ive heard of dogs being bathed with pet safe pet shampoos for fleas or ticks and the dogs had bad reactions to the mild dose of pesticide in the shampoo. Pesticides will effect every dog differently but to us it's just not worth the risk!

Diatomaceous Earth (FOOD GRADE ONLY!) sprinkled around your property will help to control fleas and ticks as it dries out their exoskeleton.

                                                                            Chicken Jerky Treats

There has been a lot of complaints about Chicken Jerky treats, since 2007 there has been over 1800 people who have complained about their dogs getting diarrhea, vomiting, not wanting to eat and low activity levels. The FDA has not found any toxins on test done to these types of treats, but that does not stand up to the conclusion that there is something in these treats that is causing sick dogs and the death of at least 8 dogs. Analysis found the brands with the most complaints were Nestle’s Waggin’ Train, and Kingdom Pets.

Brands with the most complaints

Waggin' Train, 69 complaints

Kingdom Pets, 35 complaints

Smokehouse, 11 complaints

Canyon Creek, 9 complaints

Beastro, 8 complaints

Most common complaints

Vomiting, 129 complaints

Diarrhea,  99 complaints

Low appetite, 81 complaints

Low activity level, 89 complaints

Waggin' Train, 6 deaths

Kingdom Pets, 1 death

Milo's Kitchen, 1 death

The FDA has issued a warning on these treats but will not demand a recall as the test they have preformed on the treats come back with no toxicity levels or harmful bacteria.

The FDA has had this to say

"The signs that may be associated with chicken jerky products include decreased appetite; decreased activity; vomiting; diarrhea, sometimes with blood; increased water consumption and/or increased urination. These signs may occur within hours to days of feeding the products.

Laboratory tests may indicate kidney problems, including Fanconi-like syndrome. Although many dogs appear to recover, some reports to the FDA have involved dogs that have died.

FDA continues to investigate the problem and its origin. Some of the illnesses reported may be the result of causes other than eating chicken jerky."
